CE Requirements for California Social Worker

How many CE units does California require?

First-time renewals: 18 hours in previous 2 years
Subsequent renewals: 36 hours every 2 years

Additional Information

3 hours Telehealth (one-time requirement- effective July 1, 2023)

6 hours law and ethics– 3 hours pertaining to California law and ethics (effective January 1, 2023)

6 hours suicide risk assessment and intervention (one-time requirement-effective 2021)

First time renewals:

7 hours HIV/AIDs for LMFT, LCSW, LPCC

LEP first time renewals: 7 hours child abuse assessment and reporting

15 hours alcoholism and other chemical substance dependency

ASW- 3 hours of California Law & Ethics EACH year

All hours may be earned through self-study

A course taken on law and ethics designed specifically to meet supervisor training requirements cannot also be accepted toward meeting the six-hour law and ethics course required of all licensees each renewal period. In other words, a single course will not fulfill both requirements. However, all such courses do count toward the overall 36-hour CE requirement.
