Diversity is a broad and potentially daunting subject that all therapists must be able to broach and manage for themselves as clinicians, with their clients, with their trainees and with their peers. With multiculturalism comes special gifts, as well as complex challenges. Some of these are described below:
Where do you come from? Why don&#8217;t you go back where you came from? You are out of place! The white questioner does not recognize that s/he too is an outsider. After all the United States is a country of mostly outsiders. In the United States it is not so important that we are different colors, shapes, sizes, abilities, etc., but that we perceive the other as &#8220;in or out&#8221; based on who has power to determine place. I live in a culture where whites have held the power to define who is powerful, beautiful, successful and acceptable. People without power often feel marginalized, angry, helpless or rebellious. Therapists who treat people who society marginalizes must be willing to help them find their own power and to channel their anger towards usable outcomes. This is a difficult task.
Learning about others, laughing with them about some of the things they were taught as kids; celebrating commonalities while accepting difference is all possible in the United States because democracy provides space for differences. When we have lots of resources, people seem more generous, outward looking and accepting. Race and ethnicity are difficult subjects to talk about, but culture can be dissected, joked about, discussed and embraced.
This intermediate course is comprised of five articles. The first article asks readers to consider a paradigm shift from a focus on the intrapersonal to the socio-cultural context in psychotherapy. Therapists are encouraged to consider the impact of bigotry and oppression of clients, as well as the cultural values and beliefs held by the client. The second article discusses the knowledge, skills and awareness necessary for treating people representing key ethnic groups. A brief history of the each ethnic group is provided, as well as information about the worldview or orientation that guides each culture. Although many members of each of the identified groups has adopted and adapted to the majority culture, the oppressive forces of bigotry and racism inform the lives of all these specific ethnic groups. The third article is a poignant review of a clinical book that surfaces intense multicultural issues between the two reviewers. It brings to life the issues that are more dryly identified in the guidelines. The fourth article reviews key principles for mental health professionals to practice with all clients. Illustrative examples are provided for each principle. The fifth article provides vignettes for the clinician to consider, invoking ethically and multiculturally competent decisions. Additional resources and references are provided for further study, but they are not part of the course.

DESCRIPTION: Most therapists get very little training in sexuality. The public would be quite surprised, for example, that a counselor can get licensed without hearing the words vibrator, infidelity, prostate, or cunnilingus during their education.
Without specialized training, clinicians are left to rely on personal experience (which may not be so great), religious beliefs (which may not match our clients’), or the ideas of popular culture. And so most therapists base their interventions regarding sexuality on stereotypes, distortions, and factual errors without knowing it.
In this fast-paced webinar, award-winning sex therapist Dr. Marty Klein will highlight the most common myths therapists have about sexuality—that is, common sources of clinical errors. You may be surprised to learn, for example, that:
~ Preferences for kinky sex are sometimes wholesome and healthy, and sometimes an expression of emotional pathology.
~ Pornography is rarely the actual subject when couples are in conflict about pornography.
~ In roughly half of all heterosexual cases of desire discrepancy, the higher desire partner is female.

DESCRIPTION: Ozempic and related drugs now help people lose up to 20% of their body weight  with generally manageable side effects. As the price of these drugs drops, even more of our patients will take them.
How are these drugs (GLP-1 agonists) affecting couples and families? What about the self-image, decision-making, and sexual choices of individuals who finally lose weight after years of struggle and failure? How are the mates, children, friends, and co-workers responding to familiar people with suddenly unfamiliar bodies? And how are these slimmer people responding to others’ responses to them?
Not every newly-slim person will revel in the new attention they get at work. Not every couple will easily navigate the de-centering of food in one partner’s life. Not every lifelong-shy person will feel comfortable with the increased encouragement to socialize. Not every marriage will enjoy the melting away of one newly-slim partner’s sexual inhibitions. Not every newly-slim parent will know how to deal with their teenagers’ envy or insecurity. And not every newly-slim person will feel comfortable admitting how they’ve lost all that weight. And what about the loss of identity?

DESCRIPTION: Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a therapeutic approach developed by Richard Schwartz, Ph.D that views a person as composed of various &#8220;parts&#8221; or sub-personalities, each with its own perspectives, memories, and roles. These parts can be thought of as an internal family, with some parts taking on managerial roles to protect the individual, while others hold onto pain and trauma. The core concept in IFS is the &#8220;Self,&#8221; which is seen as the compassionate, calm, and wise center of a person. The aim of IFS therapy is to foster a healthier relationship between the Self and the parts, promoting understanding and healing.
